If you want motivate people to join you need to show example. It’s so easy to take a role of a professional expert but that - if something - can really give an uninspiring image of the activities.
Even if we in Caddies project have been part of local development processes as employed persons representing some organization, the best results we have gained when we have forgot our professional role, and acted as human beings. With our heart, smile, laugh, tears and hands. It doesn’t mean that we should forget the other role we have, but by showing people that we want the development as much as they, and we are not afraid of any kind of tasks we have gained their respect.
This is important especially in the beginning of the process, but after a while when people have found the power in themselves it’s important to take some steps back and take the role of “supporter” instead of “doer”. But still, even if you don’t have to use your hands that much anymore, don’t forget to show your heart.
Also making you little bit fun is an encouraging example. We are all just ordinary people who make mistakes and don’t always success 100%. Showing this is really a trust-building factor. |
